President Recep Tayyip Erdogan hosted Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa at the presidential complex in Ankara on Wednesday for talks on bilateral cooperation and regional security, with the meeting convening on the margins of a historic NATO summit bringing together leaders of the 32-member alliance. The closed-door discussions addressed defense coordination and diplomatic efforts to stabilize the region amid ongoing security challenges, according to an official statement from Türkiye's Communications Directorate.
Bilateral cooperation
Erdogan reaffirmed Ankara's commitment to stand by the Syrian people during the reconstruction period and stressed that keeping Syria out of regional conflicts is "vital" for rebuilding the war-torn country. "Efforts to strengthen cooperation between Türkiye and Syria would continue to intensify," Erdogan said, adding that Ankara would maintain its support for Damascus across political and economic spheres.
NATO gathering
The Ankara meeting marks the second NATO summit hosted by Türkiye since the 2004 Istanbul gathering, with the current session focused on Europe's defense capacity, alliance spending targets, and military support for Ukraine. Sharaa represented Syria as a guest of the summit, which provided a platform for bilateral negotiations between Türkiye and partner nations on security and trade cooperation. Türkiye, which joined the alliance in 1952, has maintained its strategic position as a key NATO member for nearly 75 years.
