Türkiye calls for permanent ceasefire, Sudanese-led peace process at UN

Ankara's UN envoy urged international partners to support an inclusive political solution, warning against foreign interference and emphasizing that lasting stability requires Sudanese ownership.
Türkiye's UN envoy called Thursday for an immediate permanent ceasefire and an inclusive political process in Sudan, emphasizing that any lasting solution must be Sudanese-led to ensure genuine stability. Speaking during a Security Council session on Sudan, Ambassador Ahmet Yildiz expressed Ankara's grave concern over the ongoing conflict and deteriorating humanitarian situation in the northeastern African nation.

Support for Territorial Integrity and Warning Against Foreign Interference
Reaffirming Türkiye's unwavering support for Sudan's unity and sovereignty, Yildiz stated that Ankara considers these principles "very important for the stability of Sudan and the whole region." He pointedly warned against the role of external actors in prolonging the fighting, noting "with grave concern the negative impact of foreign interference in Sudan and its implications on the continuation of the conflict, as well as the potential spillover risks it creates on the wider region." The remarks come amid reports of regional and international powers backing various factions in Sudan's devastating civil war.

Dialogue and Sudanese Ownership as Path to Resolution
"Türkiye is of the opinion that the most effective way for ending the conflict is dialogue and diplomacy," Yildiz told council members. He stressed that meaningful outcomes cannot be achieved "if the dialogue is not owned and led by Sudan," positioning Ankara firmly behind the principle of national sovereignty in peace processes. Yildiz called on international partners to transform their efforts into "an inclusive peace process that will enable a permanent ceasefire, followed by a comprehensive political process and accountability."
