Turkish Vice President Cevdet YilmazVice President Cevdet Yilmaz said the European Parliament's resolution on the 1974 Cyprus Peace Operation is "null and void," rejecting the measure as a tool of Greek Cypriot propaganda that undermines the assembly's credibility while urging lawmakers to examine the situation in Gaza rather than engage in historical revisionism.
Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz on Friday rejected a European Parliament resolution on the 1974 Cyprus Peace Operation as "null and void," charging that the measure reduces the assembly to a tool for Greek Cypriot propaganda while carrying no legal significance for Ankara or the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). Speaking at Ercan Airport in Nicosia alongside TRNC Prime Minister Unal Ustel, Yilmaz said the European Parliament had damaged its own credibility by adopting the text. "We do not recognize this decision in any way. It is null and void," he said, adding that the resolution "diminishes the credibility and reputation of the European Parliament."
Yilmaz urged the Strasbourg-based assembly "not to fall for such games," dismissing the resolution as baseless populist rhetoric that ignores historical realities on the island.
Historical context and Gaza comparison
Yilmaz argued that the 1974 operation secured lasting peace for both Turkish and Greek Cypriots over the past five decades, noting that Türkiye acted as a guarantor state under international law to prevent the annihilation of Turkish Cypriots. "Those engaging in such polemics at the European Parliament should first look at the genocide taking place in Gaza," he said, warning that Turkish Cypriots could have faced a similar fate to Palestinians without the 1974 intervention.
Ruling party condemns 'vile slander'
AK Party spokesperson Omer Celik condemned the resolution in equally forceful terms, describing it on the NSosyal platform as "a vile slander against the heroic Turkish Armed Forces." "The so-called resolution adopted by the European Parliament is a vile slander against the heroic Turkish Armed Forces. We condemn this so-called resolution," Celik said, rejecting the text as baseless and calling for support for the TRNC "in the name of historical honesty."
Communications Director Burhanettin Duran also criticized the decision on X, labeling it "unacceptable" and accusing the parliament of leveling "baseless allegations" against the Turkish military.
Cyprus dispute background
Cyprus has remained divided since 1974, when a Greek Cypriot coup seeking union with Greece prompted Türkiye's military intervention as a guarantor power to protect Turkish Cypriots from persecution and violence. The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus was established in 1983, though decades of UN-led peace talks — including a failed 2017 summit in Switzerland with guarantor nations Türkiye, Greece, and Britain — have yet to yield a comprehensive settlement.
The Greek Cypriot Administration entered the European Union in 2004, the same year Greek Cypriot voters rejected a UN reunification plan in a referendum. Ethnic violence dating to the early 1960s had previously forced Turkish Cypriots into defensive enclaves for their security.
