The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus on Thursday dismissed a European Parliament resolution on Cyprus as "null and void," accusing the institution of deliberately distorting the realities of the 1974 intervention and adopting a biased approach that targets both Türkiye and the Turkish Cypriot people.

The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus on Thursday condemned a European Parliament resolution on Cyprus as "null and void," warning that the text deliberately distorts the realities of the 1974 Turkish intervention and targets both the Turkish Cypriot people and Ankara.

Resolution 'distorts history'

The Foreign Ministry issued the statement on the social media platform X, rejecting what it described as the European Parliament's "biased, prejudiced and politically motivated approach" to the decades-old dispute. "We strongly condemn this resolution, which distorts the 1974 Turkish military intervention and targets the Turkish Cypriot people and Türkiye," the ministry said, according to Anadolu Agency.

1974 intervention

The ministry underscored that Türkiye's 1974 intervention came in response to a Greek Cypriot coup aimed at annexing the island to Greece, which triggered systematic attacks and massacres against Turkish Cypriots between 1963 and 1974. The operation — conducted as a guarantor power — put an end to the violence and paved the way for the TRNC's founding in 1983, the statement noted.

EU 'lost impartiality'

"Instead of addressing the atrocities and crimes against humanity committed by the Greek Cypriot side against the Turkish Cypriot people during this period, the European Parliament has once again exceeded its authority by making baseless accusations against the heroic Turkish Armed Forces," the ministry said. It added that the resolution demonstrates Brussels has abandoned neutrality to become a mouthpiece for Greek Cypriot claims, with UN-sponsored peace talks on the divided island remaining stalled since the last round collapsed in 2017.
