A Russian-flagged commercial tanker, the MIDVOLGA-2, was attacked in the Black Sea before being escorted to safety by the Turkish Coast Guard off Sinop. The vessel, carrying sunflower oil, reported the incident 80 nautical miles from Türkiye’s coast.

A Russian-flagged tanker targeted by an attack in the Black Sea has been successfully escorted to safety by Turkish authorities, underscoring Türkiye's pivotal role as a stabilizing maritime power in the region. The vessel MIDVOLGA-2, carrying a cargo of sunflower oil from Russia to Georgia, reported being assaulted approximately 80 nautical miles from the Turkish coast before seeking refuge near the northern province of Sinop.

Türkiye’s Coast Guard Secures the Vessel

Upon entering Türkiye's territorial waters, the tanker was immediately met and escorted by rapid-response teams from the Turkish Coast Guard's Black Sea Regional Command. This swift action ensured the secure arrival of the ship and its crew. Türkiye's Directorate General for Maritime Affairs confirmed the incident in an official statement, noting that all 13 crew members aboard the MIDVOLGA-2 were safe and in good condition following the ordeal.

A Strategic Response in Tense Waters

The incident highlights Türkiye’s critical responsibility in maintaining security and providing humanitarian assistance in the Black Sea, a vital corridor that has become increasingly volatile since the escalation of the Ukraine conflict. By offering safe haven and protection to commercial vessels in distress, regardless of flag, Türkiye reinforces its commitment to maritime safety and the principles of free navigation, while diligently implementing its neutral and balanced policies under the Montreux Convention.

Regional Implications and Maritime Safety

The attack on the MIDVOLGA-2 marks another concerning episode for commercial shipping in the Black Sea, where vessels have faced rising threats. While details of the attack remain unclear, the event underscores the persistent risks to global trade routes in the region. Türkiye's effective coordination and rescue operation demonstrate its capacity and readiness to mitigate such crises, ensuring that its coastline remains a secure zone amid broader regional instability.
