Türkiye says NATO assets intercepted Iranian munition entering Turkish airspace

Türkiye said on Friday that a ballistic munition launched from Iran and entering Turkish airspace was "neutralized by NATO air and missile defense assets deployed in the Eastern Mediterranean," according to the Defense Ministry. The announcement marks the latest in a series of incidents where projectiles fired during the US-Israeli war with Iran have threatened Turkish territory.

Decisive measures

"All necessary measures are being taken decisively and without hesitation against any threat directed at our country's territory and airspace. Consultations are being conducted with the relevant country to clarify all aspects of the incident," the ministry stated. The reference to consultations with Iran suggests Ankara is maintaining diplomatic communication with Tehran even as it defends its airspace.

National security priority

The ministry added: "All developments in the region are being closely monitored and assessed with national security as the foremost priority." Türkiye has repeatedly emphasized its determination to protect its sovereignty amid the escalating conflict, with President Erdoğan and Foreign Minister Fidan delivering firm messages to Iranian counterparts about the unacceptability of airspace violations.

Regional context

The interception comes as the US-Israeli war with Iran enters its 15th day, with over 1,300 killed in Iran according to Tehran authorities and thousands of missiles and drones launched in both directions. Türkiye, while not a party to the conflict, has been affected by spillover effects including airspace violations, flight suspensions and economic impacts from regional instability.
