Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said Thursday that Türkiye and South Korea have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation across a wide range of sectors. Following talks in Seoul, Fidan stated on X: “We reaffirmed our common determination to develop our trade relations and increase mutual investments.”
Strategic sectors and regional issues
The two sides discussed “joint initiatives” in strategic sectors, including nuclear energy, transportation, the defence industry, and advanced technology. Fidan added that the talks included comprehensive views on current regional and global issues, particularly developments in the Asia‑Pacific and the Middle East. The two countries also confirmed the importance of close cooperation on international platforms such as the UN, G20, and MIKTA (Mexico, Indonesia, South Korea, Türkiye, Australia).
Historical ties
Fidan also addressed students at Korea University, sharing Türkiye’s assessments of the challenges facing the international system and the future of global governance. “The cherished memory of our martyrs and veterans will continue to inspire future generations as a symbol of the eternal friendship between the two countries,” he said, referring to the Turkish soldiers who fought in the Korean War (1950‑1953). Türkiye was one of the few countries that sent troops to support South Korea under the UN flag. Fidan concluded: “We will continue to deepen the strategic partnership between Türkiye and the Republic of Korea on the basis of mutual benefit.”
