The Turkish Foreign Ministry has expressed worry over the deteriorating situation in Yemen, pledging support for efforts to preserve the country's unity and sovereignty. The statement follows a separatist group's seizure of key eastern provinces.

Türkiye has formally expressed deep concern over the escalating internal conflict in Yemen, labeling the current situation a significant source of regional worry. In a statement released Friday, the Turkish Foreign Ministry affirmed Ankara's support for all initiatives aimed at safeguarding Yemen's unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity to ensure lasting peace and prosperity for its people.

Praise for Regional De-escalation Efforts

The ministry specifically welcomed what it described as the "prudent stance" adopted by Saudi Arabia in the face of recent hostilities. It also acknowledged the steps taken by both Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates to foster security and stability within the war-torn country. This diplomatic support from Ankara aligns with ongoing regional attempts to mediate and contain the latest flare-up in violence, which threatens to unravel fragile political processes.

Background: Separatist Advances in the East

The immediate cause for concern stems from military actions by the Southern Transitional Council (STC), a separatist faction. Since December 3, STC forces have taken control of parts of the eastern province of Hadramout and, days later, expanded into the neighboring province of Mahra. Together, these two provinces constitute nearly half of Yemen's total territory. This unilateral takeover has triggered widespread local and international calls for the STC to withdraw its forces and return to previous positions.

Humanitarian Crisis and International Response

In response to the escalating crisis, a joint Saudi-Emirati military team was dispatched to Aden to negotiate a rollback of the STC's advances. The United Nations has warned that further escalation could have catastrophic consequences for Yemen, already grappling with one of the world's most severe humanitarian and economic crises. Türkiye's statement reinforces its consistent diplomatic position, advocating for political solutions that preserve state unity and prioritize the well-being of the Yemeni population above all else.
