Türkiye welcomes new Iraqi government, pledges full support

Türkiye has welcomed the new Iraqi government led by Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi after it received a parliamentary vote of confidence. Ankara expressed hope for stability and regional integration, reaffirming its commitment to providing necessary support and deepening cooperation across all sectors.
Türkiye has officially welcomed the formation of Iraq’s new government under Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi, which assumed office on Thursday after securing a vote of confidence in the Iraqi Council of Representatives. In a statement, the Turkish Foreign Ministry expressed its best wishes for the new administration during what it described as a “sensitive period” in the region.
Commitment to stability and prosperity
The ministry voiced hope that the new government would take strong steps with a positive agenda toward Iraq’s stability, prosperity, and integration with the region. “As Türkiye, we will continue to provide the necessary support for Iraq’s efforts in this direction,” the statement read. Ankara also reaffirmed its determination to advance cooperation with Baghdad in all areas, emphasising the deep-rooted ties between the two neighbours.
Strategic context
The welcome comes as Türkiye and Iraq have been working to expand cooperation on security, energy, water management, and the Development Road Project — a major transport corridor linking the Grand Faw Port in southern Iraq to Türkiye and onward to Europe. Ankara views a stable, prosperous Iraq as essential for regional security and economic integration. Turkish officials have previously expressed support for Iraq’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, including against cross-border threats from armed groups.
