Türkiye's Bayraktar KIZILELMA drone makes air combat history

In a world first, Türkiye's indigenous Bayraktar KIZILELMA unmanned combat aircraft has successfully destroyed a supersonic airborne target using a beyond-visual-range missile. This historic test, conducted over the Black Sea, marks a revolutionary leap in aerial warfare, drawing global recognition for Türkiye's defense technology.
Türkiye’s defense industry has achieved a global aviation milestone with its national unmanned combat aerial vehicle, the Bayraktar KIZILELMA, successfully executing the world's first beyond-visual-range (BVR) air-to-air missile strike. The test, which took place over the Black Sea near Sinop, involved the drone detecting and neutralizing a jet-powered target, a feat that establishes a new chapter in modern warfare and underscores Türkiye's growing prowess in advanced defense technology.
A Global First in Aerial Warfare
The successful test has garnered significant international attention, with defense experts and global media hailing it as a historic precedent. Russian news agency Tass reported that KIZILELMA "entered the history of world aviation," while China's Xinhua highlighted the sophisticated integration of its sensor fusion and indigenous missile systems. The achievement signals a major shift in combat doctrine, moving sixth-generation unmanned capabilities closer to operational reality.
Domestic Technology Integration
The milestone was made possible through the collaboration of leading Turkish defense firms. KIZILELMA utilized the domestically produced MURAD AESA radar from Aselsan to track the target and fired the indigenous GOKDOGAN BVR missile, demonstrating a complete national technology loop. The test also showcased joint operational capabilities, with the unmanned jet flying in formation with five F-16 fighter jets from Merzifon airbase.
A New Era for Türkiye's Defense Sector
Selcuk Bayraktar, Chairman of Baykar, announced the success on social media platform X, stating that this achievement "opens a new chapter in aerial warfare" and is the result of "full domestic engineering in Türkiye." Baykar, which is currently the largest UAV exporter globally, continues to expand its footprint, with its products now in active service across dozens of countries. This test firmly positions the Turkish defense sector at the forefront of unmanned combat innovation.
