Ambassador Baris Kalkavan has demanded a comprehensive investigation into a knife attack in Montenegro's capital, Podgorica, which allegedly involved Turkish citizens. He warned against turning the isolated criminal act into a provocation against the Turkish community and urged the public to reject xenophobic narratives. Kalkavan reaffirmed the strong historical ties between the two nations and assured Turkish nationals of intensive safety efforts.

Türkiye’s Ambassador to Montenegro, Baris Kalkavan, has called on Montenegrin authorities to conduct a prompt and thorough investigation into a weekend stabbing incident in Podgorica. The attack, which left a local man with non-life-threatening injuries, is alleged to have involved Turkish citizens. Ambassador Kalkavan emphasized that this isolated criminal act must not be exploited to target the Turkish community or harm bilateral relations.

A Call for Justice and Calm

Speaking at a reception for Republic Day, Ambassador Kalkavan stated, “We expect Montenegrin authorities to fully clarify the incident and bring those responsible to justice as soon as possible.” He expressed regret that the event was being manipulated into a provocation, directly addressing Montenegrin youth: “I call on our young friends here not to fall for the games of a few provocateurs.” He confirmed that Türkiye would take all necessary legal and political steps regarding the process.

Strengthening Historical Bonds

The ambassador underscored the deep-rooted diplomatic relations between Türkiye and Montenegro, which span over 146 years. He highlighted that Montenegro's peace and stability are crucial for the wider Balkan region. Kalkavan urged the Montenegrin public not to allow "inhumane concepts such as xenophobia, hate speech, and mob mentality" to take root, praising the majority of citizens who had shown solidarity with the Turkish community.

Ensuring Safety and Deepening Cooperation

Reassuring Turkish nationals in Montenegro, Kalkavan confirmed that both Turkish and Montenegrin authorities were making “intensive efforts” to ensure their security. He added, “Our cooperation will continue to grow, especially in eliminating crime networks of Turkish origin operating in Montenegro.” The ambassador also noted that Türkiye remains a top investor in Montenegro, with expanding economic ties.

Official Response and Regional Context

In the aftermath of the Podgorica knife attack, Montenegrin Prime Minister Milojko Spajic announced a temporary suspension of the visa-free regime for Turkish nationals. This decision followed localized tensions and calls for deportations by small protest groups. The Turkish embassy has consistently condemned the hostile rhetoric, stressing that the incident should not damage the longstanding friendly relations between the two nations.
