Two prototypes of HURJET, Turkiye's first domestically produced jet trainer and light attack aircraft, are seen in flight as they arrive in Istanbul for the International Defence Industry Fair (IDEF 2025) on July 19, 2025 in Istanbul, Türkiye.

Türkiye's domestically developed Hurjet advanced jet trainer has completed extensive testing with 340 flights and is preparing for mass production. A major export agreement with Spain for approximately 45 aircraft is also in final negotiations, marking a significant milestone for the Turkish defense industry.

Türkiye's first indigenous advanced jet trainer, the Hurjet, is progressing toward mass production following the successful completion of an extensive testing program. According to Turkish defense officials, two prototypes have accumulated approximately 260 flight hours across 340 sorties, demonstrating the aircraft's readiness for serial manufacturing. Developed by Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI), the Hurjet represents a significant achievement in Türkiye's growing defense aviation capabilities.

Production Timeline and Technical Specifications

The Turkish Air Force is scheduled to receive its first Hurjets in 2026, with initial deliveries destined for the Turkish Stars aerobatic team. Assembly of these production aircraft is currently underway, with the first newly built jet expected to take flight in the initial quarter of next year. TAI is establishing a production line with a capacity of two aircraft per month. The single-engine, supersonic trainer measures 13.6 meters in length, stands 4.1 meters high, and features a 9.5-meter wingspan. It can reach speeds up to Mach 1.4, operate at altitudes of 45,000 feet, and carries a payload capacity of three tons across seven stations.

Major Export Breakthrough with Spain

In a significant development for defense exports, TAI is finalizing an export agreement with Spain for the Hurjet platform. CEO Mehmet Demiroglu confirmed to Spanish outlet El Espanol that a final supply contract is expected soon. The potential deal involves approximately 45 aircraft to replace Spain's aging F-5 fleet, with an estimated value of €3.12 billion ($3.6 billion). Initial deliveries to Spain are projected to commence in 2028, representing a major international endorsement of Turkish aerospace technology.

Program History and Mission Profile

The Hurjet program commenced in August 2017, with the aircraft achieving its maiden flight in April 2023 after completing comprehensive ground tests. During its testing phase, the aircraft successfully performed formation flights and demonstrations with the Turkish Stars, showcasing its maneuverability and reliability. Designed primarily for advanced jet training, the Hurjet is also configurable for armed and unarmed air patrol missions, offering operational flexibility to potential customers.
