Türkiye’s intelligence chief holds Gaza ceasefire talks with Hamas in Istanbul

Turkish National Intelligence Organization (MIT) chief Ibrahim Kalin met with a Hamas delegation in Istanbul to discuss the Gaza ceasefire agreement. The talks focused on truce compliance, reported violations, and Türkiye's role as a guarantor. Both sides also addressed humanitarian aid delivery and the path toward Palestinian reconciliation.
Turkish National Intelligence Organization (MIT) chief Ibrahim Kalin held discussions with a high-level delegation from Hamas in Istanbul on Saturday, centering on the implementation and challenges of the Gaza ceasefire. The Hamas team was led by Khalil al-Hayya, a member of the group's Political Bureau and head of its negotiation committee.
Focus on Truce Compliance and Violations
A key point of the meeting was the status of the ceasefire that halted the two-year war. The Hamas delegation stated its adherence to the truce terms while presenting information regarding violations by Israeli forces. The talks examined Türkiye's intensive diplomatic efforts as a guarantor country to ensure the ceasefire holds and to prevent further breaches.
Humanitarian Aid and Next Phase of Peace Plan
The dialogue also covered Türkiye's ongoing humanitarian assistance to Gaza and coordinated efforts with regional and international partners to increase the flow of essential supplies, including tents. Both parties discussed the necessary conditions to advance to the second phase of the Gaza Peace Plan and strategies to overcome existing obstacles in the process.
Shared Commitment to Palestinian Goals
According to statements from the meeting, the Turkish and Hamas officials reaffirmed a mutual commitment to Palestinian national unity and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state. The meeting occurs amid Palestinian accusations that Israel has repeatedly violated the ceasefire agreement signed on October 10, which ended a war that resulted in nearly 70,700 fatalities, predominantly women and children, and over 171,000 injuries since October 2023. The Gaza Health Ministry reports at least 395 Palestinian deaths from Israeli attacks since the truce began.
