Tropical typhoon engulfs southwestern Japan, moving northward

Tropical Typhoon Khanun hit parts of Japan on Wednesday with heavy winds and downpours, affecting railway services, flights, and electricity.

The typhoon has engulfed southwestern Japan's Kagoshima and Kumamoto provinces and is moving in the northern direction, in southern Kyushu, following its appearance in Tanegashima and Yakushima islands, Tokyo-based Kyodo news reported.

In Kyushu, multiple local governments have issued evacuation orders, prompting over 6,000 people to seek shelter in Kumamoto, Nagasaki, Miyazaki, and Kagoshima provinces.

Weather officials have warned of landslides, flooding, river overflowing, violent winds, and high waves.

About 12,000 households in four provinces, along with Oita, are still without power, as per Kyushu Electric Power Co.

Railway services were halted in some regions.

All Nippon Airways and Japan Airlines scrapped 400 flights, impacting 45,000 passengers, with the possibility of additional cancellations on Thursday.

Heavy rainfall in the typhoon-hit region have also been forecast.
