Death toll climbs
Venezuela's Communication and Information Ministry announced on Saturday that the death toll from last month's powerful earthquakes in the country's north has climbed to 2,954, with rescue teams continuing operations amid hundreds of aftershocks. According to the ministry statement released in Caracas, 16,592 people have been injured and 6,462 individuals rescued from the rubble since the twin quakes struck on June 24.
Widespread destruction
The tremors — measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude and occurring just 39 seconds apart according to the US Geological Survey — affected 856 buildings, completely destroying 190 structures. Caracas deployed 29,567 personnel to coordinate relief efforts alongside 3,281 international rescue workers currently operating in the hardest-hit zones, the ministry said.
Aftershocks persist
The ministry noted that search teams remain active to ensure public safety and support reconstruction activities, adding that authorities have recorded 942 aftershocks since the initial disaster. Rescue operations are ongoing in the northern regions as the government works to address the widespread devastation caused by the June 24 seismic events.
