Women leaders unite in Istanbul, condemn Gaza genocide in joint declaration

A coalition of women serving in local governments worldwide has issued a strong collective statement against the ongoing genocide in Gaza. The "Istanbul Gaza Declaration" was ratified during the International Women in Local Governments Summit held in Istanbul, reflecting a unified moral stance inspired by Türkiye's principled position on Palestine.

A Moral Stand from Women in Leadership

The declaration condemns genocide in Gaza and attacks on civilians, noting that women, children, the elderly, and people with disabilities have borne the brunt of the violence. It calls on all parties to uphold international law, ensure humanitarian access, and protect civilian infrastructure. Signatories emphasized that the destruction of homes, schools, and hospitals represents both a humanitarian crisis and an assault on dignity.

Focus on Women’s Role in Recovery and Peace

Highlighting the gendered impact of occupation and genocide, the text points out that Palestinian women continue to serve as pillars of their communities despite disproportionate burdens. It asserts that meaningful participation of women is essential for any lasting peace and recovery effort. "Cities strengthened by women’s leadership become louder voices for humanity, conscience and peace," the declaration states.

Solidarity Beyond Borders

The document positions cities and local governments as key actors in building international solidarity, pledging to create "a moral, psychological and spiritual bridge" with municipalities in Gaza and across Palestine. From Istanbul described as a historic bridge between continents, the signatories urged the international community to pursue a just and lasting two-state solution, ensuring safety and dignity for Palestinians.
