Some 1,262 Iranian citizens have returned to their country following suspension of direct travel routes with Iran, the Iranian Consulate in Dubai said. The citizens returned to Iran via alternative routes, including flights via Afghanistan and Armenia, the semi-official ISNA reported on Wednesday, citing the consulate. The consulate said it does not have any dedicated programs for travel by ship or air for the time being.
UAE entry restrictions
The consulate's statement comes amid media reports that the UAE has restricted the entry of Iranian nationals. The move was reportedly communicated through notifications by Emirates Airlines, Etihad Airways, and Flydubai. The restrictions affect travel between the two Gulf countries amid heightened regional tensions.
Conflict context
The UAE has been among the most frequently targeted Gulf states in Iran's retaliatory campaign since the US-Israeli offensive on Iran began Feb. 28. The UAE's air defenses have intercepted 414 ballistic missiles, 15 cruise missiles and 1,914 drones, according to compiled official data. Falling debris from intercepted drones has caused damage in multiple emirates, including a fatality in Fujairah on Wednesday.
