The African Union has expressed grave concern about Mali's rapidly deteriorating security situation, where terrorist blockades have severely impacted civilian access to essential supplies. AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Youssouf condemned recent attacks and kidnappings while pledging the bloc's full support for stability in the Sahel region.

The African Union has issued an urgent warning about the escalating security and humanitarian crisis in Mali, where terrorist groups have established blockades disrupting essential supplies to civilians. AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Youssouf expressed grave concern Sunday about the rapidly deteriorating situation in the West African nation.

Condemnation of Attacks and Abductions

In an official statement, Youssouf strongly condemned deadly attacks that have killed numerous civilians and heightened instability across Mali's regions. He specifically denounced recent kidnappings, including the abduction of three Egyptian nationals, demanding their immediate and unconditional release while labeling such acts as serious violations of international humanitarian law.

Call for International Response and Cooperation

The AU chairperson called for a "robust, coordinated and coherent international response to counter terrorism and violent extremism in the Sahel." He emphasized the need for enhanced cooperation, intelligence sharing, and sustained support to affected states in the region, reaffirming the African Union's readiness to assist Mali and other Sahel countries in their pursuit of peace and stability.

Regional Impact and International Reactions

The escalating violence by ISIS-affiliated militants has forced Mali's government to close educational institutions amid a compounded power, humanitarian and security crisis. The deteriorating conditions have prompted several Western nations, including the United States, United Kingdom and France, to advise their citizens to leave the country and avoid travel to the troubled nation, while regional partners like Türkiye monitor the situation closely.
