Swiss authorities have completed the identification of all 40 victims who perished in the New Year's Eve bar fire in Crans-Montana. The final list includes minors and young adults from several European nations, while a criminal probe into two bar managers for alleged negligence continues.

Police in Switzerland have successfully identified all 40 individuals who died in the catastrophic fire at a bar in the Alpine resort of Crans-Montana on New Year's Eve. The victims, many of whom were teenagers and young adults, hailed from Switzerland, France, Italy, Belgium, Portugal, and other countries, reflecting the international nature of the popular ski destination.

The final identifications

In an update on Sunday, Valais cantonal police announced the final 16 victims had been identified. This group included individuals aged 14 to 33 from several nations, including a 15-year-old girl holding French, Israeli, and British citizenship. A previous update on the same day listed victims with Swiss, Italian, Romanian, French, and Türkiye citizenship, highlighting the tragedy's broad impact across Europe. Authorities have stated they will release no further personal details out of respect for the grieving families.

Ongoing criminal investigation

The identification process, involving forensic experts and a disaster victim identification team, concludes one phase of the response. A criminal investigation is actively underway, with two managers of the 'Le Constellation' bar formally accused of "negligent homicide, negligent personal injury and negligent arson." Preliminary findings from the prosecutor's office suggest the blaze was ignited by sparklers on champagne bottles that were held too close to the ceiling.

A community in mourning and seeking answers

The fire, which also injured 119 people—many still in critical condition—ranks among Switzerland's deadliest in decades. As the judicial process moves forward, the focus remains on supporting the survivors and the families of the victims from across the continent. For the international community, including nations like Türkiye with citizens affected, the incident underscores the universal importance of rigorous safety enforcement in public venues to prevent such devastating loss of life.
