Audit reveals major security gaps at Louvre museum after jewel heist

A French Court of Audit report has exposed significant security deficiencies at the Louvre Museum following a major jewel theft. The audit found one-third of rooms in the Denon Wing lack surveillance cameras, while three-quarters of Richelieu Wing rooms have no video monitoring systems.
A preliminary audit report has revealed substantial security vulnerabilities at the Louvre Museum in Paris, following the theft of eight historically significant jewels from the Galerie d'Apollon. The French Court of Audit document highlights systematic failures in the museum's protection systems despite its substantial operating budget.
Widespread Surveillance Deficiencies
According to the audit findings, the Denon Wing—home to both the Galerie d'Apollon and the Mona Lisa—contains numerous rooms without camera coverage, with approximately one-third lacking surveillance equipment. The security situation appears even more concerning in the Richelieu Wing, where three-quarters of exhibition spaces operate without video monitoring capabilities.
Management and Budgetary Shortcomings
The audit criticized museum management for insufficient commitment to addressing security gaps, noting that allocated funds remain inadequate compared to identified needs. Despite an annual operating budget exceeding €323 million, security investments have reportedly functioned as a "budget adjustment variable" rather than receiving prioritized funding.
Theft Details and Investigation
Paris prosecutors confirmed thieves used a mechanical ladder to access a first-floor window they forced open during the heist. French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez described the stolen items as possessing "inestimable heritage value," emphasizing the cultural significance of the loss beyond mere monetary valuation.
