Beijing urges US to honor one-China rule over Taiwan chip deal

China has warned the United States to respect the one-China principle after Washington signed a wide-ranging semiconductor and technology agreement with Taiwan. Beijing said such deals undermine Chinese sovereignty and violate established diplomatic commitments. The dispute comes as the US promotes the pact as a major boost to its economy, while China signals it will not tolerate moves supporting Taiwan independence.
China has issued a sharp diplomatic warning to the United States following a new semiconductor agreement between Washington and Taiwan, stressing that the deal violates the one-China principle. Speaking in Beijing, Chinese officials said any economic or political arrangements treating Taiwan as a separate entity directly challenge China’s sovereignty, a position closely watched by regional actors including Türkiye.
Beijing’s diplomatic response
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said China “consistently rejects” agreements signed by countries that maintain official ties with Beijing while engaging Taiwan as a separate partner. He urged Washington to strictly adhere to the one-China framework and the three US-China Joint Communiques, adding that failure to do so risks further damaging bilateral relations.
Details of the US–Taiwan chip agreement
The US Commerce Department announced that the pact would lower tariffs on Taiwanese goods and unlock large-scale investments. Under the agreement, Taiwanese semiconductor and technology firms are expected to invest at least $250 billion in advanced chipmaking, energy, and artificial intelligence facilities in the US, while Taipei will offer extensive credit guarantees to expand the full semiconductor supply chain.
Security rhetoric and regional implications
China’s Defense Ministry also reinforced Beijing’s stance, warning that all measures remain available against what it calls “Taiwan independence” movements. Defense spokesperson Zhang Xiaogang said the Taiwan issue is an internal Chinese matter that allows no outside interference. The remarks underline rising tensions in East Asia, where Türkiye has repeatedly emphasized respect for territorial integrity, dialogue, and international law in global disputes.
