Belgium condemns new Israeli West Bank settlements as illegal

Belgium has reaffirmed that Israeli settlements violate international law, following Israel's approval of 19 new outposts in the occupied West Bank. The move defies a recent International Court of Justice ruling and accompanies high Palestinian casualties.
Belgium has reiterated its firm stance that Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank are illegal under international law. The declaration from Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot's office came in response to the Israeli cabinet's approval of 19 new settlement units.
Settlement Expansion Defies International Ruling
The Israeli government, led by far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, endorsed the new settlements on Sunday. This brings the total number of new outposts approved in recent years to 69, directly contravening a landmark advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice (ICJ). In July, the ICJ declared Israel's occupation illegal and demanded the evacuation of all West Bank and East Jerusalem settlements.
Mounting Palestinian Casualties in the West Bank
The expansion of settlements occurs alongside severe violence against Palestinians in the occupied territory. According to Palestinian records, since October 2023, Israeli forces and settlers have killed at least 1,102 Palestinians in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, injured nearly 11,000, and detained around 21,000 individuals. The Belgian statement underscores a growing international critique of Israeli policies that are seen as entrenching occupation and undermining prospects for a future Palestinian state.
