At least ten people were killed and ten others injured in a mass shooting at a tavern in South Africa’s Gauteng province, police confirmed Sunday. The attack took place overnight at the KwaNoxolo tavern in the Bekkersdal township, located west of Johannesburg, marking another incident of deadly violence at a drinking establishment in the country.

According to reports from the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), unknown assailants opened fire randomly on people both inside the venue and gathered outside in the Tambo section of the township. The injured were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. Police initially confirmed the death toll and said officers remained on the scene as a large-scale investigation got underway.

Gauteng’s Acting Police Commissioner, Fred Kekana, stated that multiple specialized units had been deployed to handle the case. “We are still busy obtaining statements. Our national crime and management team has arrived. The provincial crime scene management team has arrived and a team from the local criminal record center is here, so is our serious crime investigating team, crime intelligence, and the provincial crime detective team is on scene,” Kekana said, outlining the comprehensive response.
