Belgium urges citizens to avoid Iran, Israel, Lebanon as regional tensions soar

Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot warned Belgians against all travel to Iran and non-essential visits to Israel and Lebanon, urging nationals in Iran to depart immediately amid escalating instability.
Belgium issued urgent travel warnings Friday advising its citizens to avoid travel to Iran, Israel, and Lebanon due to rapidly deteriorating security conditions across the Middle East. Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Maxime Prevot specifically urged Belgian nationals in Iran to leave the country as soon as possible.
Official Warning
"Given the unstable situation in the region over the past few days, I would like to reiterate the travel warnings currently in force and advise all Belgians in the region to remain vigilant, follow the instructions of local authorities and carefully consult the travel advice issued by the Foreign Ministry," Prevot posted on X. He advised against non-essential travel to Israel and Lebanon while stressing that travel to Iran should be avoided entirely. "Travel to Iran for any reason is strongly discouraged for Belgian citizens and dual nationals," he added.

Context of Escalation
Brussels' warning comes amid heightened regional tensions as indirect US-Iran nuclear talks in Geneva show progress while military preparations continue on both sides. The United States has reinforced its military presence in the region, and several countries have begun evacuating personnel or issuing travel advisories. Belgium's directive follows similar actions by other European nations concerned about the potential for rapid escalation that could endanger their citizens in the region.

Precautionary Measures
The Belgian government's emphasis on dual nationals reflects particular concern about individuals who may face additional legal complexities in case of conflict. The call for Belgians in Iran to leave at the earliest opportunity underscores the gravity with which Brussels views the current situation, even as diplomatic efforts continue to achieve a negotiated resolution to the nuclear standoff.
