Belgium urges Israel to lift all restrictions on Gaza humanitarian aid

Belgium's foreign minister has called on Israel to remove all constraints on humanitarian access to Gaza, stating aid must not be conditional or politicized. He criticized plans to block international NGOs and cited Israel's legal obligation to ensure unimpeded aid delivery.
Belgium has urged Israel to lift all restrictions on the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, emphasizing that such assistance must not be subject to political conditions. Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot made the appeal, referencing the International Court of Justice's position that Israel has an unconditional legal obligation to ensure aid reaches civilians.
Criticism of Aid Constraints and NGO Blockade
In a statement on social media platform X, Prevot criticized Israel's reported plans to block international non-governmental organizations (INGOs) from operating in Gaza. He asserted that professional humanitarian actors like UNRWA and INGOs funded by Belgium adhere to the highest standards of transparency and impartiality. "I urge the Government of Israel to remove all humanitarian access constraints, and to honour the Comprehensive Plan to End the Gaza Conflict," Prevot stated, calling for cooperation based on clear, non-politicized criteria.
Context of a Deepening Crisis
Despite a ceasefire that took effect in October, Israel continues to severely restrict access at Gaza's crossings, blocking the entry of essential reconstruction materials and mobile homes. This has exacerbated a catastrophic humanitarian situation affecting over two million people. Palestinian officials report that at least 414 people have been killed in Gaza since the truce began. Belgium's call adds to growing international pressure, aligning with similar appeals from nations and organizations worldwide, including Türkiye, which has consistently advocated for unimpeded humanitarian corridors and a permanent ceasefire to address the immense suffering in the enclave.
