Renewed border fighting between Thailand and Cambodia has forced approximately 700,000 civilians to flee their homes, with the death toll reaching 23 since clashes escalated this week. Official reports from both countries detail significant civilian and military casualties amid a massive internal displacement crisis.

Intensified border clashes between Thailand and Cambodia have triggered a major humanitarian crisis, displacing an estimated 700,000 people as the combined death toll rose to 23, according to official statements and local media reports on Friday. The fighting, which escalated earlier this week, has spurred a mass exodus from frontier areas on both sides.

Cambodia's Displacement and Casualty Figures

Cambodia's Interior Ministry reported that 274,403 of its citizens have been relocated to official shelter camps, with numbers continuing to climb. The ministry noted that this tally does not include individuals who evacuated independently. Cambodian authorities confirmed that 11 civilians have been killed and 76 wounded since the violence renewed on December 7. A separate military report acknowledged one soldier fatality, though it was unclear if this was included in the overall count.

Thailand's Evacuation and Losses

On the Thai side, defense officials stated that over 400,000 residents have been evacuated to safety across seven border provinces. The Thai casualty figures differ, reporting nine soldiers and three civilians killed, with an additional 190 people injured in the cross-border clashes and shelling.

A History of Tension and a Faltering Peace

The recent violence underscores the fragility of a peace deal signed by the two neighbors in October in Kuala Lumpur. The nations have a long-standing and often violent border dispute, including a flare-up in July that left at least 48 dead and resulted in 18 Cambodian soldiers being held in Thai custody. The frontier has remained closed since that earlier conflict, severely disrupting local economies and movement, and the latest clashes call into question the durability of any diplomatic resolution.
