Brazil's Lula declares UN has failed, slams Security Council inaction

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva sharply criticized the United Nations Security Council during his visit to Malaysia, stating the global body has "stopped working" and failed to prevent major wars, including the war in Gaza.
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva delivered a sharp critique of the United Nations during his visit to Kuala Lumpur, declaring the global body has effectively "stopped functioning" amid ongoing international conflicts. Speaking at a joint press conference with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Lula specifically targeted the UN Security Council's failure to prevent major wars and address humanitarian crises.
Security Council Under Fire
"The United Nations Security Council doesn't work. It simply doesn't," Lula stated emphatically. He noted that recent major conflicts have been initiated by the Council's own permanent members without proper consultation or accountability. The Brazilian leader specifically referenced the prolonged suffering in Gaza, questioning how the international community can remain silent in the face of genocide.
ASEAN Summit Context
Lula's comments came during his three-day visit to Malaysia as a guest of honor at the ASEAN summit. This marks his first trip to the Southeast Asian nation since beginning his latest term as Brazil's president in January 2023. The visit also includes planned meetings with other world leaders, including US President Donald Trump, who is attending the regional gathering.
Broader Critique of Global Governance
Beyond conflict resolution failures, Lula also criticized major powers for not fulfilling their climate commitments, noting that the climate crisis disproportionately affects the world's poor. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim praised his Brazilian counterpart as a defender of workers' dignity and social justice, noting their agreement to deepen cooperation in trade, investment, energy, and agricultural technology.
