Canada's Ambassador to the United States, Kirsten Hillman, will resign in the new year as critical negotiations over the CUSMA trade pact remain deadlocked. She has pledged to remain available to support the Canadian team.

Canada's Ambassador to the United States, Kirsten Hillman, has announced her resignation, effective in the new year, as Ottawa and Washington remain at an impasse over the future of a key trade agreement. In a statement on X late Wednesday, Hillman acknowledged there is never a "perfect time" to leave, particularly while "the Canada-US relationship is being rewritten."

A departure during a critical CUSMA review period

Hillman, a veteran diplomat and trade lawyer who has served as ambassador since March 2020, played a central role in negotiating the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) in 2017. Her departure coincides with the pact's mandatory six-year review, a process clouded by uncertainty as US President Donald Trump has repeatedly hinted he may not renew the deal, suggesting he could "work out another" or let it expire.

Pledge to support ongoing negotiations

In her announcement, Hillman stated that her resignation is timed to allow a new team to be put in place to "see the CUSMA review through to its conclusion." She added that she will "remain available" to support Canadian negotiators in the coming months. Trade tensions have escalated recently after Trump imposed tariffs on Canadian goods and halted talks over a Canadian anti-tariff advertisement aired in the US.

Praise from both sides of the border

News of her resignation drew praise from officials in both countries. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer called her "a class act" and a "good actor," though he expected her departure would not affect ongoing talks. Former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau lauded her as "a real patriot" who helped resolve trade disputes and strengthen the economy, highlighting her significant tenure during a period of profound bilateral adjustment.
