China calls for ceasefire as US-Iran strikes raise tensions

China urged the United States and Iran to uphold the existing ceasefire after a new wave of military exchanges heightened tensions across the Middle East. Beijing warned that continued escalation could undermine diplomatic efforts and called for a lasting political solution to the conflict.
China on Wednesday appealed to both the United States and Iran to respect the ceasefire agreement and avoid further military escalation, as fresh exchanges of strikes threatened to destabilize the Middle East. Speaking in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said the latest developments were causing serious concern and stressed the importance of preserving diplomatic momentum.
Beijing urges restraint
Addressing reporters, Mao said China remains concerned about the renewed hostilities despite the truce currently in place. She emphasized that additional military action would not benefit any side and urged all parties involved to remain committed to dialogue rather than confrontation.
Fresh military exchanges
The statement came after Washington announced operations targeting Qeshm Island, describing the action as a response to what it called attempted Iranian attacks across the region. US officials also reported that American and allied forces intercepted several missiles and drones allegedly launched by Iran.

Regional security concerns
The renewed tensions extended beyond Iran and the United States. Kuwait confirmed that its air defense systems were activated during the early hours of Wednesday to counter what authorities described as hostile missile and drone activity. The incident underscored growing concerns about the wider regional impact of the conflict.
Calls for diplomacy
China reiterated its support for a political resolution, urging relevant actors to safeguard opportunities for peace and maintain negotiations. Mao stated that honoring ceasefire commitments and advancing diplomatic engagement would be essential for achieving long-term stability and restoring calm across the Middle East.
The latest developments come despite a ceasefire that has been in effect since April 8. The truce followed a conflict that began on Feb. 28, when military operations involving the United States and Israel against Iran triggered a broader regional confrontation.
