China urges political settlement after Chernobyl zone strike

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said Beijing attaches high importance to nuclear facility safety and urged all parties to pursue dialogue, following Ukrainian allegations that Russian forces struck a spent fuel storage facility in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone.
China's Foreign Ministry on Monday reiterated its call for a political settlement to the Ukraine conflict following allegations that Russian forces struck a nuclear fuel storage facility in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian told reporters in Beijing that the government urges all parties to pursue dialogue and early de-escalation.
Nuclear safety concerns
Lin said China "attaches high importance to the safety and security of nuclear facilities" across the conflict zone. "Dialogue and negotiation is the only viable way out," he said, adding that the ultimate resolution depends on a political settlement. He urged relevant parties to create conditions for resuming talks.
Alleged strike on facility
The comments came after Ukrainian Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal accused Moscow of launching an overnight drone attack on Sunday against the Centralized Spent Fuel Storage Facility inside the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. Shmyhal said a Russian drone struck a building at the site, causing a fire that emergency crews later extinguished. Russia did not immediately comment on the allegations.
