China expands satellite internet network with new launch

China has successfully deployed another cluster of low Earth orbit satellites as part of its ambitious space-based internet initiative. The launch from Hainan province adds to the country's 13th dedicated internet constellation, marking continued progress in a strategic sector where global competition is intensifying.
China launched a new batch of low Earth orbit (LEO) communication satellites on Monday, expanding its growing satellite internet constellation. The successful deployment from the Hainan Satellite Launch Center represents another step in Beijing's strategy to establish a competitive presence in the global space internet race.
Successful Launch and Deployment
A Long March-12 carrier rocket lifted off at 10:41 a.m. local time (0241 GMT), carrying the satellites to their designated orbit. According to China's state-run Xinhua News Agency, the mission proceeded without issues, with the satellites successfully reaching their predetermined positions in low Earth orbit to form the country's 13th internet-focused satellite group.
Strategic Context and Global Competition
This launch occurs amid heightened global competition in satellite internet infrastructure, primarily between established Western projects and emerging Chinese constellations. The development of independent space-based internet capabilities is viewed as strategically vital for national security and technological sovereignty, a concern shared by other nations like Türkiye, which is also developing its space capabilities.
China's Broader Space Ambitions
The mission underscores China's rapidly advancing space program, which has included lunar exploration, a permanent space station, and now the systematic development of satellite mega-constellations. These LEO internet satellites are designed to provide broadband connectivity, particularly to remote and underserved regions, while also enhancing China's independent technological infrastructure.
