A deadly explosion at a fireworks production facility in central China left at least 21 people dead and more than 60 injured, prompting a large-scale emergency response. Authorities launched rescue operations and evacuated nearby population amid fears of further blasts, while officials ordered a full investigation into the cause and workplace safety conditions.
A powerful explosion at a fireworks factory in Liuyang, central China, has killed at least 21 people and injured 61 others, raising fresh concerns over industrial safety in the country. The incident occurred Monday in Hunan province, a key manufacturing region, and triggered an immediate response from emergency services.
Rescue teams mobilized after blast
Chinese authorities deployed more than 480 rescue workers divided into multiple teams, supported by specialized robots, to search for survivors and contain risks at the site. The factory, operated by Huasheng Fireworks Manufacturing and Display Company, is located in Liuyang, a city under the administration of Changsha, the provincial capital.
Risk of secondary explosions
Officials warned that the blast area was close to storage units containing black powder, increasing the possibility of additional explosions. As a precaution, nearby residents were evacuated and a safety perimeter was established to protect surrounding communities. By Tuesday morning, initial search efforts had concluded, confirming the casualty figures, while injured victims were transferred to hospitals.

Investigation and detentions underway
A second phase of search and recovery operations is ongoing as authorities continue to look for missing individuals. Experts from China’s Emergency Management Ministry have been sent to the scene to assist with both rescue and investigation efforts. Police have taken the company’s responsible into custody as part of the inquiry into the cause of the explosion.
Leadership calls for accountability
Chinese President Xi Jinping urged “all-out efforts” to locate those still unaccounted for and ensure proper medical care for the injured. He also called for stricter enforcement of safety regulations and emphasized accountability for those responsible. Premier Li Qiang echoed these concerns, stressing the need for stronger workplace safety measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
