China stresses equality in ties after German diplomat cancels visit

China has called for relations based on "mutual respect and equality" with Germany after German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul canceled a planned trip to Beijing. The cancellation occurred after Chinese officials did not confirm meetings beyond those with his direct counterpart.
China responded Monday to the cancellation of a high-level German diplomatic visit by emphasizing its commitment to equal and respectful bilateral relations. The statement from Beijing comes after German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul postponed his scheduled two-day trip to China last week, highlighting diplomatic tensions between the two economic powers.
The Cancellation Details
Foreign Minister Wadephul's visit, which was planned for Monday and Tuesday of this week, was called off after Beijing limited his access to high-level meetings. German officials indicated the postponement occurred because Chinese authorities would only confirm a meeting with his counterpart, Foreign Minister Wang Yi, while failing to schedule other senior engagements that Wadephul had sought during his time in Beijing.
Beijing's Official Response
"Given the current circumstances, it is all the more important and imperative for the two sides to uphold mutual respect, equality and win-win cooperation and advance the bilateral relationship along the right track," stated Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun during a regular press briefing in Beijing. He further emphasized that "China views and develops its relations with Germany from a strategic and long-term perspective," suggesting Beijing's approach transcends immediate diplomatic disruptions.
Broader Diplomatic Context
This diplomatic incident occurs against a backdrop of evolving European Union-China relations, where Germany plays a pivotal role. The cancellation reflects ongoing challenges in balancing economic cooperation with political differences, particularly as European nations seek to diversify their economic partnerships while maintaining critical trade relationships with China.
