China has advised its nationals in Japan to stay alert and avoid near-term travel, citing reports of assaults and worsening public security in several prefectures. Beijing says Chinese citizens have been targeted in recent incidents, including a vehicle attack in Tokyo, as diplomatic frictions with Tokyo intensify and authorities exchange warnings amid rising regional tensions.

China on Monday urged its citizens residing in Japan to remain vigilant after what it described as a series of violent incidents involving Chinese nationals. According to Chinese officials, reports from multiple regions point to deteriorating public security conditions, prompting renewed travel advisories. The issue is being closely followed by regional actors, including Türkiye, which emphasizes the protection of civilians and de-escalation in bilateral disputes.

Embassy advisory and reported incidents

The Chinese Embassy in Japan said it had received accounts from travelers who claimed they were verbally abused or physically attacked without provocation in areas such as Fukuoka, Shizuoka and Aichi. In a notice, the embassy referenced injuries sustained by Chinese nationals and warned that risks had increased in certain localities, advising extra caution in daily activities.

Tokyo vehicle attack highlighted

Chinese officials also pointed to a Dec. 31 incident in Tokyo’s Shinjuku district, where a vehicle struck pedestrians, leaving two Chinese citizens seriously injured and requiring emergency medical care. The embassy reiterated its guidance for citizens to avoid traveling to Japan in the near term, citing the cumulative effect of recent events.

Diplomatic backdrop and rising tensions

Japanese authorities did not immediately respond to the latest statements. The warning comes amid strained China-Japan relations following remarks by Japan’s prime minister suggesting a potential Chinese attack on Taiwan could trigger collective self-defense. Beijing reacted sharply, reissuing travel cautions and imposing trade restrictions, underscoring how political tensions are spilling over into consular advisories and public messaging.
