China's largest freshwater lake shrinks dramatically amid prolonged drought

China's Poyang Lake, the country's largest freshwater body, has seen its water level drop by approximately 90% from its high-water season, entering an extreme low-water state. The lake has remained below the official drought warning line for 217 days this year, breaking previous records for early onset and severity. The situation poses significant challenges for local water supply and threatens the ecosystem of a major Asian waterfowl wintering site.
China's Poyang Lake, the nation's largest freshwater lake, has experienced a drastic reduction in its water volume, with levels now approximately 90% lower than during its high-water season. Authorities reported on Sunday that the lake in Jiangxi Province has entered an "extremely low-water state," marking another severe episode in a pattern of worsening drought conditions.
Record-Breaking Drought Duration and Severity
According to data from the Xingzi hydrological station, the water level fell to just 8 meters on Sunday morning, breaching the extreme low-water threshold. This year, the lake's level dropped below the 12-meter drought warning line on August 8, which was 87 days earlier than the historical average. So far, Poyang Lake has remained below this critical line for 217 days—nearly two-thirds of the year—indicating a persistent and severe water shortage.
Local Measures and a Pattern of Worsening Conditions
To cope with the water supply crisis, local companies have been forced to take emergency measures. Wang Chunhua, a production head at a company in Duchang county, stated that ten pumps have been deployed to transport water from the outer lake to treatment plants. This situation is part of a disturbing trend; in recent years, the lake has repeatedly set new records for low water levels, with dry seasons starting earlier, lasting longer, and reaching lower depths. In 2022, the lake hit a historic low of 4.6 meters, and the dry season of 2023 began on July 20, the earliest date ever recorded.
Ecological Significance and Broader Implications
Poyang Lake is a vital ecological zone, renowned for its well-preserved ecosystem and its role as a crucial wintering ground for migratory waterfowl in Asia. The peak bird migration period to the lake typically occurs from mid-December to early January, making the current water levels a significant concern for wildlife. The ongoing shrinkage highlights broader environmental and resource management challenges facing China's freshwater reserves.
