Clashes erupted again on Sunday between Yemeni government forces and Houthi fighters in the western province of Al Hudaydah, escalating tensions in the war-torn country. The government's National Resistance Forces said the fighting began after Houthi troops moved toward Jabal Dhubas, south of Al Hudaydah.
Government Claims and Houthi Response
The government forces said they pushed the Houthi fighters back and inflicted direct casualties, without providing further details. There was no immediate comment from the Houthis. The clashes follow earlier fighting on July 5, in which the government said 15 soldiers and 50 Houthi fighters were killed.
Recent Escalation
The renewed clashes come after the Yemeni government struck the runway at Houthi-held Sanaa airport to prevent an Iranian aircraft from landing. The Houthis accused Saudi Arabia of being behind the attack and launched missile strikes on Saudi territory, breaking years of calm. Yemen has been mired in civil war since 2014, when the Iran-backed Houthis overran the capital Sanaa.
