Colombian president accuses Trump of backing 'drug traffickers'

Colombian President Gustavo Petro accused Donald Trump of aligning Washington with narco-paramilitary forces by endorsing conservative candidate Abelardo de la Espriella, warning that the US is helping bring criminal networks to power ahead of the June 21 runoff.
Colombian President Gustavo Petro on Thursday accused US President Donald Trump of backing forces linked to drug trafficking, alleging that Washington's endorsement of conservative presidential candidate Abelardo de la Espriella aligns the United States with narco-paramilitary networks.
Palace interview
Speaking at the presidential palace in Bogota, Petro told France 24 that Washington's allies in Colombia "come from the narco-paramilitary regime" and represent genocidal drug traffickers. He alleged that Trump is violating commitments made in February not to intervene in Colombian electoral affairs, adding that the US is implementing "an ideological policy that divides the world between those who think like them and those of us who don't."
Trump endorsement
Trump on Tuesday endorsed De la Espriella — known as "El Tigre" (The Tiger) — describing the lawyer as a "smart, strong, and tough leader" dedicated to advancing Colombia's interests. "The results of this Election are very important to the future of Colombia and its relationship to the United States," Trump wrote on Truth Social, citing the candidate's "tremendous accomplishments" and political support for him personally.

Runoff context
De la Espriella advanced to the June 21 runoff against leftist Senator Ivan Cepeda after Sunday's first-round vote, with the campaign unfolding amid renewed security concerns over armed groups involved in cocaine trafficking. Petro warned that figures claiming to fight drug trafficking are actually helping bring crime to political power, noting that candidates remain sharply divided over how to confront illicit organizations.
