Counterterror police probe anti-Muslim attacks in Scottish capital

Police Scotland has launched a counterterrorism investigation into a series of suspected anti-Muslim attacks in Edinburgh that injured several people on Friday night, officials said, as community leaders warned of rising faith-based hostility and the Muslim Council of Britain said the community is "rightly nervous and worried".
Counterterror probe opened
Police Scotland has opened a counterterrorism investigation into a series of suspected anti-Muslim attacks in Edinburgh on Friday evening, arresting a 36-year-old white Scottish man following incidents near Broomhouse Mosque and other city center locations. Officers responded to reports from the Telford Road and Leith Walk areas after the initial assaults, though authorities confirmed that none of the victims sustained life-threatening injuries.
Officials condemn violence
Assistant Chief Constable Catriona Paton condemned the attacks, saying: "I want to send a clear message of support to all our communities that there is no place for racism or faith-based hate in a Scotland which is at its best when we stand together." Muslim organizations confirmed that several victims were members of the Muslim community, with the Scottish Association of Mosques reporting that two worshippers were attacked after leaving Broomhouse Mosque while the Muslim Council of Britain warned the community is "rightly nervous and worried."
Suspect detained
Videos shared on social media and verified by the BBC appeared to show a shirtless man carrying a large weapon damaging businesses before being restrained by police, during which he allegedly shouted that he was "protecting the country." Counterterrorism officers are now assisting the investigation under the direction of Scotland's Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service as detectives examine whether the attacks constitute terrorism.
