Decisive week ahead for Ukraine peace talks, EU Chief says

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that the EU is "absolutely firm" on securing a sustainable peace for Ukraine, warning the coming week will be critical. Discussions intensified on security guarantees for Kyiv and future financial support as the conflict approaches its fourth year.
European Commission President Urs von der Leyen has declared the upcoming week "decisive" for diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the war in Ukraine, following a series of intensive talks with international partners.
Firm Stance on a Sustainable Peace
Speaking on Thursday, von der Leyen emphasized the unwavering position of the European Union and its allies. "Despite the pressure, we remain absolutely firm in our goal: achieving a just and sustainable peace for Ukraine," she stated on the social media platform X. She elaborated that a sustainable agreement must prevent future conflict, noting it should not "contain the seeds of future conflict and destabilise the broader European security architecture."
Focus on Security and Financial Guarantees
The high-stakes discussions also centered on providing long-term security assurances for Kyiv. As the war nears its fourth year, von der Leyen confirmed that talks addressed the need for "robust and credible security guarantees" for Ukraine. Furthermore, she briefed leaders on crucial efforts to lock in financial support packages for Ukraine covering the 2026-2027 period, with proposals currently on the table.
Urgency in International Diplomacy
Von der Leyen revealed she had consulted with the so-called "Coalition of the Willing," a group of nations supporting Ukraine. She underscored a shared sense of urgency among global partners, stating, "Our proposals are on the table, and the sense of urgency is clear to everyone." The diplomatic push comes amidst a critical phase in the conflict, with international attention also focused on regional stability and its implications for nations like Türkiye, a key NATO actor in the Black Sea region.
