President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney that Ankara and Ottawa are working to elevate bilateral cooperation across trade, security and energy sectors, voicing hope that the upcoming NATO summit in Türkiye would reinforce allied solidarity and regional stability.

Expanding bilateral cooperation

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan spoke by telephone with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Saturday to discuss the advancement of bilateral relations and pressing regional developments, according to a statement from Türkiye's Communications Directorate. The two leaders reviewed ongoing efforts to deepen ties between Ankara and Ottawa across multiple strategic sectors, with Erdogan emphasizing that both nations are actively working to elevate their partnership in trade, security, defense industry collaboration and energy.

The Turkish president assured his Canadian counterpart that Ankara would maintain its forward momentum toward these objectives, noting the shared commitment to expanding mutual interests. The conversation took place on the NSosyal platform, where the directorate detailed the broad range of topics covered during the diplomatic exchange.

NATO summit expectations

Erdogan expressed optimism that the upcoming NATO summit scheduled for July 7-8 in Ankara would serve as a catalyst for reinforced solidarity among alliance members. The Turkish leader highlighted the importance of collective security cooperation during a period of heightened global uncertainty, stressing that the gathering would provide a crucial opportunity to align strategic priorities among allies.

The summit marks a significant diplomatic milestone for Türkiye as it prepares to host alliance leaders for high-level discussions on transatlantic defense posture and regional stability challenges.

Canada Day greetings

During the conversation, Erdogan extended his congratulations to Carney and the Canadian people on the occasion of Canada Day, which is observed annually on July 1. The gesture underscored the warm diplomatic rapport between the two leaders as they marked the national holiday amidst broader discussions on bilateral and multilateral cooperation.
