Trump attacks 'communists,' touts military might in July 4 speech

US President Donald Trump used his Independence Day address on Saturday to condemn communism as a "cancer" that must be "cut out" and tout resurgent US military strength, while marking the 250th anniversary of American independence in Washington.
Ideological warnings
Speaking during the Salute to America celebration in Washington, Trump described the United States as "the home of freedom" and "the land of liberty." "This is a flag that's the banner of the most extraordinary, most exceptional, most incredible nation ever to exist on the face of the earth," he said. He repeatedly framed communism as incompatible with American values, declaring: "We don't want communists in our country. Never worked, and it never will work," adding that the system stood in direct opposition to constitutional rights.
Calling communism "like a cancer," Trump said: "You got to cut it out fast," while stressing that Americans must remember their heritage as "a historic and heroic people with a heroic spirit and a heroic purpose on this beautiful earth of ours." He also highlighted his record on gun rights, stating that he had guarded the Second Amendment "very, very powerfully" during his nearly six years in office. While he did not name specific individuals, his remarks appeared aimed at several social Democrats who recently won primary elections ahead of November's midterm contests.
Military recruitment and foreign actions
The US president pointed to a major turnaround in military recruitment, noting that while two years ago the armed forces "couldn't fill a job," entry standards are now strict and applications are "overflowing." He cited recent actions against Venezuela and Iran as evidence of renewed American strength, saying: "You look at Venezuela, you look at Iran, we wiped it out, wiped out their military." He also invoked the construction of the Panama Canal as a symbol of American sacrifice, calling it "one of the greatest engineering feats of all time" despite the loss of 38,000 American lives during its construction.
Weather delays and celebration
Throughout the address, Trump linked patriotism, military power and economic resurgence, arguing the country was entering a new era of dominance. "The American dream is back, very strong, beautiful," he said, adding: "Today our country is winning again, and we're winning like never before." The speech was delivered more than an hour behind schedule due to severe weather including high winds and rain, and was followed by a massive fireworks display after some daytime events had been postponed due to extreme heat, according to Anadolu Agency.
