EU Patriots group warns Iran war could trigger new migration crisis in Europe

The Patriots, a political party grouping several right-leaning and Eurosceptic parties in the European Parliament, warned Thursday that escalating tensions in the Middle East could trigger a new migration and security crisis in Europe. In a statement ahead of the European Council meeting, the group said the EU is "not adequately prepared" for potential migration flows, arguing that the bloc's current migration framework is insufficient to prevent mass arrivals.

Border security concerns

"The situation in the Middle East could trigger a new migration and security crisis for which Europe is not adequately prepared," they said. They called for stronger protection of the EU's external borders and increased efforts by member states to secure national borders, describing the current migration framework as "inadequate." They also warned of rising internal security threats, including terrorism, urging the European Commission and relevant authorities to ensure the safety of European citizens.

Iranian people and regional stability

The leaders also expressed support for "a stable and secure Iran where the Iranian people can live their lives free" but stressed that the broader regional situation could have direct consequences for Europe. The statement reflects concern that instability in Iran could produce refugee flows similar to previous Middle East conflicts.

Energy security worries

They also raised concerns over energy security, warning that the crisis could disrupt supply and drive up prices, particularly affecting landlocked countries. The group urged the European Commission to prioritize energy stability and support member states, while emphasizing national sovereignty and calling for policy changes to address economic and security risks.

Conflict context

The US and Israel launched joint attacks on Iran on Feb. 28, killing over 1,300 people according to Iranian authorities, including former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The war has expanded to Lebanon, displaced over one million people, and disrupted global oil markets through the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz, with Brent crude exceeding $116 per barrel.
