Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan held separate phone calls Wednesday with his Jordanian and Japanese counterparts to discuss regional developments and ongoing diplomatic efforts to end the Iran war, Turkish Foreign Ministry sources said. The talks covered the Palestinian issue and the conflict's global repercussions.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, in separate phone calls on Wednesday with his Jordanian and Japanese counterparts, discussed regional developments and ongoing diplomatic efforts, according to Turkish Foreign Ministry sources. Fidan and Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi discussed the current situation in the region, including the Palestinian issue, as well as the ongoing multifaceted diplomatic efforts to end the Iran war, the sources said. The Turkish foreign minister also spoke with Japan's Toshimitsu Motegi, addressing political and economic matters, along with the Iran war and its global repercussions, the sources added.

Diplomatic engagement

The calls are part of Türkiye's intensive diplomatic efforts to mediate an end to the conflict. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Fidan have maintained regular contact with regional and global leaders since the US-Israeli offensive on Iran began Feb. 28.

Conflict context

The US and Israel launched joint attacks on Iran on Feb. 28, killing over 1,340 people according to Iranian authorities, including former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and more than 150 schoolgirls. Iran has retaliated with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf countries hosting US military assets. The conflict has expanded to Lebanon, where over 1,200 have been killed since March 2, and the Strait of Hormuz remains effectively closed.

Regional and global concerns

Japan, heavily dependent on Middle Eastern energy imports, has been affected by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and has begun releasing oil from state reserves. Jordan, which has faced repeated Iranian attacks, has maintained diplomatic engagement while calling for de-escalation.
