France rebuffs US Iran criticism: ‘It is not our operation’

President Emmanuel Macron has rejected US criticism over France’s refusal to join military action against Iran, calling a potential operation to “liberate” the Strait of Hormuz “unrealistic.” Macron stressed that Washington and Israel decided on the campaign alone and cannot expect French help.
French President Emmanuel Macron pushed back Thursday against US complaints that Paris has not provided support for the ongoing military campaign against Iran. Speaking to reporters during a visit to South Korea, Macron made clear that France considers the conflict a unilateral US-Israeli venture. “They can afterwards complain that they are not being helped in this operation they decided on their own,” he said. “It is not our operation.” The remarks mark a sharp divergence between two NATO allies as the war enters a critical phase.
Macron calls Hormuz military action ‘unrealistic’
Macron also dismissed the idea of a military operation aimed at “liberating” the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for global energy shipments that has been partially disrupted by the conflict. He described such a mission as “unrealistic,” signaling that France will not participate in any direct military intervention to reopen the strait. The position aligns with Türkiye’s own calls for diplomacy over escalation, as Ankara has repeatedly urged all parties to resolve disputes through dialogue rather than force.
Personal jab dismissed
The French leader also responded to recent personal remarks made by US President Donald Trump regarding Macron’s marriage, calling them “neither elegant nor up to standard.” Macron added: “I will not respond; it does not deserve a reply.” As transatlantic tensions simmer, Türkiye continues to position itself as a key diplomatic actor, maintaining communication with both Western capitals and regional powers to push for a ceasefire and a negotiated end to the US-Israeli war on Iran, which has killed over 1,340 people since February 28.
