Frida Kahlo painting sells for $54.7 million, sets female artist record

A 1940 self-portrait by Mexican artist Frida Kahlo has sold for $54.7 million at Sotheby's New York auction, establishing a new world record for the highest price achieved by a female artist. The painting "El sueño (La cama)" surpassed the previous record held by Georgia O'Keeffe and more than doubled Kahlo's own previous auction record.
A seminal self-portrait by Mexican artist Frida Kahlo has achieved a historic $54.7 million sale at Sotheby's New York, establishing a new global auction record for artwork created by a female artist. The 1940 painting titled "El sueño (La cama)" or "The Dream (The Bed)" significantly exceeded the previous benchmark of $44.4 million set by Georgia O'Keeffe's "Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1" in 2014.
Art Market Recognition
Anna Di Stasi, Sotheby's head of Latin American art, described the record-breaking result as evidence of evolving appreciation for both Kahlo's distinctive artistic vision and the broader recognition of women artists at the premium segment of the art market. The painting last changed hands in 1980 for just $51,000, meaning the latest sale represents an appreciation of more than 1,000 times its previous value over four decades.
Artistic Significance and Imagery
The painting presents Kahlo asleep in a floating bed enveloped by vines, with a skeleton wrapped in dynamite hovering above her—imagery widely interpreted as the artist's meditation on mortality and physical suffering. Sotheby's emphasized Kahlo's distinctive approach to reality, noting that "she never painted dreams" but instead "painted her own reality," referencing the artist's lifelong exploration of personal pain, identity, and Mexican cultural symbolism.
Exhibition Plans and Market Position
The anonymous buyer has already received exhibition requests from major institutions in New York, London, and Brussels for the artwork, which remains one of the few Kahlo pieces held in private collections outside Mexico. The sale also substantially surpassed Kahlo's previous personal auction record of $34.9 million, established in 2021 when her 1949 painting "Diego and I" went under the hammer, confirming her escalating market stature decades after her death.
