Relatives of Palestinian journalist Amal Muhammad Shamali performed funeral prayers in Gaza City on Monday after his body was received from al-Awda Hospital. Grief engulfed Gaza City on Monday as relatives of Palestinian journalist Amal Muhammad Shamali gathered to perform funeral prayers after receiving his body from the morgue of al-Awda Hospital. Shamali was killed in Israeli strikes targeting makeshift tents in the Nuseirat Refugee Camp, where displaced Palestinians had sought shelter.

Tent camp attack

The journalist was among at least six Palestinians killed in the attack on the central Gaza camp, which also claimed the lives of three children. The strikes hit areas where families had erected temporary shelters after being displaced by months of conflict, raising concerns about civilian protection even amid ongoing ceasefire arrangements.

Press freedom concerns

Shamali's death adds to the toll of journalists killed in the Gaza conflict, highlighting the dangers media workers face while covering hostilities. His colleagues and press freedom advocates have condemned the targeting of journalists, calling for investigations into attacks on media personnel and protection for those documenting the war.

Continuing toll

The funeral procession through Gaza City reflected the deep sense of loss in a community that has endured months of devastating conflict. With each death, families and communities are forced to bury their loved ones while grappling with the broader humanitarian catastrophe that has displaced most of Gaza's population and destroyed vast swaths of civilian infrastructure.
