Germany has expressed shock over an Israeli missile strike that killed an employee of a Palestinian media production company working with German broadcaster ZDF and an eight-year-old child. The Foreign Ministry emphasized the special protection owed to journalists and called for an investigation into the attack.

Germany has condemned an Israeli military strike in Gaza that resulted in the deaths of a Palestinian media worker and an eight-year-old child connected to German public broadcaster ZDF. The attack targeted the premises of Palestine Media Production in Deir el Balah, a company with decades-long collaboration with ZDF's Tel Aviv bureau.

Official German Response

German Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Kathrin Deschauer described the news as "deeply shocking" during a Berlin press briefing, emphasizing the necessity for a thorough investigation. She reiterated that journalists, humanitarian workers, and civilians must receive special protection under international humanitarian law during conflicts.

Attack Details and Casualties

Sunday's rocket strike killed a 37-year-old engineer employed by PMP and the eight-year-old son of another company employee, while injuring a 31-year-old staff member. The attack also destroyed satellite news transmission vehicles and other equipment, significantly impairing media operations in the southern Gaza region.

Media Industry Reaction

ZDF Editor-in-Chief Bettina Schausten expressed condolences to the victims' families, stating that attacks on media professionals performing their duties are "unacceptable." The incident adds to the growing death toll among journalists in Gaza, which has surpassed 250 fatalities since the conflict's escalation in October 2023.
