Germany warns Baltic Sea is Russia's new confrontation zone

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has declared the Baltic Sea an emerging confrontation zone with Russia, urging European allies to urgently bolster defense readiness against Moscow's hybrid warfare tactics.
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius issued a stark warning Tuesday that the Baltic Sea region is transforming into a direct confrontation arena with Russia, calling for accelerated defense preparations among European allies. Addressing the Berlin Security Conference, an annual gathering of European defense officials, Pistorius stated that Moscow is actively testing NATO's deterrence capabilities through coordinated hybrid attacks. "The Baltic Sea, which has long been considered a bridge between European countries, is increasingly becoming an area of confrontation in a very specific way," the minister told military and security leaders.
Pattern of Hybrid Aggression
Pistorius detailed what he characterized as Russia's strategic campaign of destabilization, citing specific incidents including damaged undersea cables, repeated airspace violations, and unidentified drones operating above critical European ports and supply networks. He emphasized that these events form a clear pattern of aggression, stating “We can no longer call these coincidences. This is strategy, and these are warning signs.” The minister identified these actions as components of Moscow's hybrid warfare, which also encompasses cyberattacks, espionage operations, sabotage activities, and disinformation campaigns targeting European nations.
Call for United European Response
In response to these mounting threats, the German defense chief underscored the necessity of maintaining European unity while significantly enhancing collective defense capabilities. Pistorius described the Baltic region as President Vladimir Putin's "testing ground for our deterrence and response capabilities," warning that Russia continues to rearm despite ongoing conflicts. He stressed that European nations must demonstrate both unity and increased military preparedness to effectively counter Russia's hybrid threats and ensure credible deterrence in the strategically vital Baltic Sea area.
