Syria, France to sign agreements during Macron's Damascus visit

Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa said France will contribute to infrastructure and financial sector development during Emmanuel Macron's visit to Damascus, marking the first trip by a Western leader to Syria since the Assad regime's ouster.
Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa announced on Monday that Damascus and Paris will sign agreements during French President Emmanuel Macron's visit to the Syrian capital, emphasizing that France will play a central role in the nation's reconstruction efforts.
Infrastructure and finance
"France will contribute to the development of Syria's infrastructure and financial sector," Sharaa told French BFM TV in remarks carried by the SANA news agency. He noted that "many other sectors" could benefit from French expertise as the country rebuilds.
Technological partnership
"Syria is currently in the reconstruction phase, and it has many resources," Sharaa said. "It needs countries that are advanced in technology, and France is one of the most advanced countries in this field."
Diplomatic milestone
Macron arrived in Damascus early Monday on the first visit by a Western leader to Syria since the ouster of the Bashar al-Assad regime in December 2024. Sharaa described the visit as "a significant development in relations between the two countries," stressing the historic nature of the rapprochement.
