Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan received a bipartisan US congressional delegation in Ankara on Monday, including Senator Jeanne Shaheen and Senator Chris Coons. The delegation is in Türkiye for the NATO Summit Defense Industry Forum and related events.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan met with a bipartisan delegation of United States lawmakers in Ankara on Monday ahead of the NATO summit, diplomatic sources said. Fidan received Senator Jeanne Shaheen, co-chair of the US Senate NATO Observer Group and a senior member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, along with Senators Chris Coons, Dick Durbin, Mike Rounds, and US Representative Mike Turner.

Summit engagements

The bipartisan US congressional delegation is visiting Türkiye to participate in the NATO Summit Defence Industry Forum and is scheduled to meet heads of state and foreign counterparts, as well as NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, according to the sources. The meetings come as President Donald Trump prepares to arrive in Ankara for the summit, where he is expected to hold bilateral talks with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

Separate engagement

Separately, Fidan addressed an event titled "European Security After the Ankara Summit: Strengthening Cooperation Among NATO Allies Across Europe," organised jointly by the Foreign Ministry's Centre for Strategic Research and Chatham House in Ankara. The discussions come amid heightened transatlantic tensions over burden‑sharing, with Trump having threatened to reduce the US role in NATO while maintaining cordial ties with Erdoğan. Fidan has previously stated that Ankara intends to use this friendship "for the benefit of the greater good, for the entire NATO family".
